Keeping Your Family Strong--Even Through Divorce

Tips To Help Improve Your Odds Of Winning A Custody Battle

by Kristen Wright

If you have decided that you would like to move forward with a child custody case, you will want to make sure that you are as prepared as possible. This way, when you hire a lawyer for their custody law services, you are giving yourself the best chance at ending up with a successful order from the judge. Here are some of the things that you will want to do in order to hopefully prove that you are able to take custody of your children:

Outline A Consistent Schedule

Children of every age need some level of consistency, so you need to be able to show the courts that you are able to provide this. If you work outside the home, you will want to gather proof of the hours that you work and whether you will always be home in the evenings or on the weekends. If you do work some hours when the children will require a babysitter, find someone who can agree to help you, such as a relative. This way, even with the babysitting, you are still providing some consistency versus passing the children off to various people.

Get Their Space Ready

Children need a room for sleep, relaxation, and play. Even if your children have to share a room, you will want to already have their beds and dressers set up. Show that you have all of the essentials that they need, as well as things that they can use for entertainment. After all, it is unlikely that the other parent will be willing to give you the things they have in their house for the kids, should you win your custody case. The kids still need their things there for visitations anyways. Take pictures of the setup that you have for the children as proof of what their living conditions would be like.

Be Honest With Your Lawyer

If you have any skeletons in your closet, even if they are from many years ago when you were very young, it might be a good idea to talk with your lawyer about them. This way, should the other parent try to use that information against you, your lawyer will have already worked on a solid defense for all of it.

Now that you have those tips in mind, you will want to take the first step in implementing these suggestions. The more of an effort you put into this, the better chances you will have of looking your best in court. After all, you want to place more focus on why you are a suitable choice instead of making the mistake of trying to bad mouth the other parent. Build yourself up instead of tearing down the other parent.
